Organ & Tissue Donation
A person may save up to 8 lives through organ donation and enhance many others through tissue donation. There are numerous resources to explore organ and tissue donation online.
If you wish to donate your organs and tissue after your death, you need to do three things:
- Educate yourself on organ and tissue donation. Details can found in the links below.
- Register to donate. If you desire to register, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is responsible for collecting name, date of birth and driver license / identification number for submission to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
- Tell your family members. You must do this step. In most states, it is possible for your family members, in their time of grief, to ignore your wishes to be a donor even if you have completed a donor card or have a donor designation on your driver's license. You must tell your family members of your wishes.
The U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services website may have answers to your questions.
The Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas Registry offers information specific to Texas residents about donating organs and tissue.
